Mimalaungkyaung Temple (မီးမလောင်ကျောင်း)
The temple, known as “The Temple Which Fire Cannot Burn”, is believed to have been built in the reign of Narapatisithu (1174-1211) and repaired in later times.
The temple stands on a rectangular platform 13 feet high which is ascended by a flight of steps. Square in plan, it has multiple roofs crowned by a tall, tapering stupa.
The name of the temple points up the hazard of fire at Bagan, whose hot, dry climate earned it the epithet “the Parched Land,” and most of whose dwellings were of wood, bamboo and thatch. A particularly devastating calamity was the Great Fire of 1225 which reduced most of the city to ashes.
