Konbaung Dynasty
The Konbaung Dynasty (1752–1885) was the last royal dynasty of Myanmar, founded by King Alaungpaya. Here is a list of the kings and the significance of their names:
1. Alaungpaya (Alaungmintaya) (အလောင်းဘုရား) – 1752–1760 (Early Konbaung Period)
Name meaning: “Future Buddha” (Alaung means a bodhisattva who aspires to enlightenment).
Significance: Founder of the dynasty, he reunited Myanmar after the fall of the Nyaungyan Dynasty.
2. Naungdawgyi (နောင်တော်ကြီး) (or) Tapayin Min (ဒီပဲယင်းမင်း)– 1760–1763
Name meaning: Naungdawgyi: “Elder Brother King.”
Tapayin Min: Count of Tapayin (Depeyin) Town
Significance: Eldest son of Alaungpaya
3. Hsinbyushin (ဆင်ဖြူရှင်) (or) Myedu Min (မြေဒူးမင်း)– 1763–1776
Name meaning: Hsinbyushin: “Lord of the White Elephant.”
Myedu Min: Count of Myedu Town
Significance: Brother of (2), Famous for his military campaigns, especially the conquest of Ayutthaya in Siam (Thailand) and successfully repulsed four Chinese invasions.
4. Singu Min (စဉ့်ကူးမင်း) – 1776–1782
Name meaning: Singu Min: Duke of Singu region
Significance: Son of Hsinbyushin- Known for his peaceful reign but was overthrown due to internal strife.
5. Phaungka Min (ဖောင်ကားမင်း) (or) Phaungga Za Maung Maung – 1782 (briefly)
Name meaning: Phaungka Za: Duke of Phaungka Township
Refers to a usurper without much legitimacy.
Significance: Son of Naungdawgy, A short-lived king with no significant achievements, only seven days.
6. Bodawpaya (ဘိုးတော်ဘုရား) (or) Badon Min– 1782–1819
Name meaning: Bodawpaya: “Grandfather King.” Grandfather of Bagyidaw and Tharrawaddy Min
Significance: Known for expanding the empire and building the Mingun Pahtodawgyi.
7. Bagyidaw (ဘကြီးတော်) (or) Sagaing Min– 1819–1837
Name meaning: Bagyidaw (Elder Uncle), Sagaing Min (Count of Sagaing Town)
Significance: Grandson of (6)- Fought the First Anglo-Burmese War, leading to the loss of Arakan, Assam, and Tenasserim.
8. Tharrawaddy Min (သာယာဝတီမင်း) – 1837–1846
Name meaning: Count of Tharrawaddy Town
Significance: Rebelled against Bagyidaw and moved the capital back to Amarapura.
9. Bagan Min (ပုဂံမင်း) – 1846–1853
Name meaning: “King of Pagan.”
Significance: Weak ruler, his reign saw the Second Anglo-Burmese War, resulting in the loss of Lower Myanmar.
10. Mindon Min (မင်းတုန်းမင်း) – 1853–1878
Name meaning: “King Mindon” (Count of Mindon)
Significance: Reformer king, moved the capital to Mandalay and worked to modernize the kingdom.
11. Thibaw Min (သီပေါမင်း) – 1878–1885
Significance: The last king of Myanmar, deposed by the British after the Third Anglo-Myanmar War in 1885.
These kings shaped Myanmar’s history during a period of great change, marked by expansion, internal reforms, and ultimately colonization by the British.
